Lotus Domino for z/OS
Baer Consulting, Inc. (BCI) can provide complete and comprehensive planning and implementation of Lotus Domino on z/OS. Our plans include migration options, capacity planning and phased implementation for ensured success. Let our years of experience with the System z platform provide the type of large-system messaging and integration solution you expect from your mainframe environment.
What is Lotus Domino?
Lotus Domino is leading the market with its enterprise-wide solution for messaging, groupware, and integrated collaborative Intranet and Extranet applications. The value of network computing is also recognized through the tightly integrated workflow, messaging, calendar and scheduling. It supports a variety of clients, including the traditional Notes client. Other clients include POP3, IMAP4, LDAP and NNTP clients.
Security and Integrity
Lotus Domino for System z uses the z/OS framework for maintaining the integrity of your data. System Authorization Facility (SAF) verifies access requests to system resources using an external security manager such as the z/OS Security Server. It is easier to provide and administer security for one System z server than for many distributed servers.
Lotus Domino Servers
The z/OS Lotus Domino family consists of three core server products (Lotus Domino Mail Server, Lotus Domino Application Server and Lotus Domino Enterprise Server). Each product provides incremental functionality that includes functionality in the previous product.
- Lotus Domino Mail Server
The Lotus Domino Mail Server is a single, reliable and easily managed environment that provides full support for Internet mail standards and Domino's messaging capabilities
- Lotus Domino Application Server
The Lotus Domino Application Server provides the functionality of the Lotus Domino Mail Server and lets you deliver collaborative Web applications integrating your enterprise systems with rapidly changing business processes to improve customer service and responsiveness. In addition to its Web application server capabilities, Domino offers directory services, roles-based security features, a work flow engine, and a messaging system.
- Lotus Domino Enterprise Server
The Lotus Domino Enterprise Server provides the functionality of Domino Mail and Application Servers and is reinforced with clustering for increased availability and reliability required by applications. Partitioning and billing are included with this server.
Lotus Domino Clients
There are three clients that make up the Lotus Domino client family. They are Domino Administrator, Domino Designer and the Notes client.
- Lotus Domino Administrator Client
The Lotus Domino Administrator is the client for Notes and Domino that simplifies system management.
- Lotus Domino Designer Client
The Lotus Domino Designer provides an environment for developers to build Web applications. It is optimized to natively integrate with enterprise systems such as relational databases, transaction processing systems, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, including SAP, PeopleSoft, and Oracle Applications.
- Lotus Notes Client
The Lotus Notes client is state-of-the-art email, calendaring, group scheduling, Web access, and information management tools. They have been integrated into one user friendly and customizable environment. This interface allows user access to read and send mail from shared databases. Advantages of Lotus Notes Client include:
- Full native support for major Internet and industry standards.
- Management of multiple mail, collaboration and directory accounts from one place.
- A single interface for many functions including email, calendaring, news reading and Web browsing.
- Integration with other applications on the desktop.
- Built-in application capabilities to automate business processes through email.
- Replicates only the changes within a document.
- Bookmark not only Web pages, but group calendar views, documents, databases and saved searches.
Large-Scale Server Advantages
Lotus Domino for System z is capable of supporting tens of thousands of users and applications with large storage requirements. It is one of the best platforms to deploy new web applications that tightly integrate with traditional System z mission-critical applications and data. Domino can be added to an existing System z with other workloads while letting the z/OS management facilities balance the workload.
Lotus Domino Deployment
A Lotus Domino for System z server and applications can be easily added to an existing Lotus Notes network without noticeable affect to users. Consolidating existing Domino servers onto a System z platform would result in fewer servers and the ability to handle significant increases in workload.
Data Access
Lotus Domino for System z enables the integration of Domino Data with traditional z/OS business applications such as CICS, IMS, and DB2. Now there are enterprise integration tools like Lotus Script Extensions (LSX) for MQ Series that allow easy transfer of data between enterprise applications and Domino based business solutions.
Cost Advantages of Lotus Domino on System z Hardware:
- Scalability
- Reliability
- Improvements in performance, capacity & maximum database size
- Availability
- Fewer servers required
- Less and simpler replication
- Less and simpler administration
- Existing System z skills can be leveraged for system management, data management, and backup to also reduce costs.
